Grants – 2012

C-I Band Program Receives Grants

Posted on April 24, 2012

On March 29th the fifth and sixth grade band students from Cuyuna Range Elementary School had the opportunity to travel to Minneapolis and attend a Minnesota Orchestra concert. The internationally known Minnesota Orchestra has a series of concerts entitled “Young People’s Concerts.” Each year they perform a number of day-time concerts specifically geared towards school-aged children. The concert that the CRES band students attended was entitled “At the Ballet,” and it featured a brand-new, full-length ballet performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “Petrushka.” The original story of “Petrushka” is set during a festival in St. Petersburg, Russia and features three puppets from a popular puppet show as the main characters. The Minnesota Dance Theatre produced a new story-line and choreography for this performance of “Petrushka.” The ballet that CRES students saw was set in a 1950’s slumber party with the main characters of a James Dean character called “The Rebel”, a Marilyn Monroe character called “The Supermodel” and an Elvis Presley character called “The Hero”. The Minnesota Dance Theatre put on a great show, and the story-line was even projected above the orchestra members so the audience could follow along.

After the performance, the CRES students had a chance to meet one of the orchestra members, Rebecca Corruccini, one of the first violinists. The students asked a lot of great questions and learned that the string on a violin bow is made out of horse hair and that it is not unusual for her to practice her instrument for five hours a day! After talking with Ms. Corruccini, the students had the chance to take a tour of Orchestra Hall.

It was a fantastic experience for first and second year band students to attend a Minnesota Orchestra concert where all of the musicians are full-time professionals who have won a spot in the orchestra by beating out 200 plus performers in auditions. It was really amazing to see and hear what years of practice and dedication can do!

The Crosby-Ironton Public Schools Foundation also awarded the Crosby-Ironton High School Band Program a grant to bring in a guest conductor to work with both the Concert Band (grades 7-8) and the Symphonic Band (grades 9-12). Mr. Steven Anderson, the band director at Central Lakes Community College in Brainerd, was able to come and work with C-I High School band students in early February. Mr. Anderson is not only a very talented musician and director, but he has a great way of communicating with students. The band students in both ensembles really enjoyed his sense of humor and the new ideas that he brought to the rehearsal.
